What is NHIF?
The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) is Tanzania's main public health insurance scheme, managed by the government for formal-sector employees and their dependents.
Who is Covered?
- Government employees (civil servants) are enrolled automatically.
- Private-sector employers can register voluntarily.
- Each member may cover up to four dependents (spouse + up to 3 children under 18).
What Does NHIF Cover?
NHIF covers outpatient visits, inpatient care, maternity services, surgery, and emergency care at accredited facilities. Dental, optical, and specialist referral services are included at some levels.
How to Use Your Cover
- Visit any NHIF-accredited facility (look for the green NHIF badge).
- Present your NHIF card or ID at reception.
- The facility bills NHIF directly — you pay nothing for covered services at "full coverage" facilities.
- For co-pay facilities, you pay a partial amount at the desk.
Tips
- Always confirm your insurer is accepted before receiving services — policies change.
- Keep your NHIF card active by ensuring your employer submits monthly contributions on time.
